Andrija Mohorovičić

Na današnji dan 18. prosinca 1936. godine u Zagrebu umro je cijenjeni znanstvenik iz područja seizmologije i meteorologije te geofizičar, OSNIVAČ PRVE METEOROLOŠKE POSTAJE U BAKRU, Andrija Mohorovičić. Postaja u BAKRU postavljena je 1887 godine, to je ujedno i početak meteorološkog prognoziranja na području tadašnje banovine HRVATSKE!
Andrija je u mjestu Volosko završio osnovnu školu, a nakon toga gimnaziju u Rijeci. U Pragu je 1875. godine na Filozofskom fakultetu upisao studij matematike i fizike. Godine 1893. Andrija je doktorirao disertacijom “O opažanju oblaka te dnevnom i godišnjem periodu oblaka u BAKRU”, a pet godina kasnije postao je redoviti član JAZU-a te izvanredni profesor iz astronomije i geofizike.
Andrija Mohorovičić rođen je 23. siječnja 1857. godine u mjestu Volosko. Nakon što je završio fakultet Andrija je neko vrijeme predavao u Osijeku i Zagrebu, a potom je na njegovu želju premješten u BAKAR u nautičku školu. U BAKRU se 1883. godine oženio sa Silvijom Vernić s kojom je imao četvero djece.
Zahvaljujući doprinosu koji je dao znanstvenoj zajednici, po Andriji je nazvan jedan od kratera na Mjesecu na strani koja se ne vidi sa Zemlje. Po njemu je ime dobio i Geofizički zavod na PMF-u, ratni brod Hrvatske ratne mornarice te asteroid pod brojem 8422. Jedan od najvećih doprinosa Andrije prema znanosti bilo je otkriće diskontinuiteta unutar Zemljine kore. Nakon potresa koji se dogodio 1909. godine u blizini Zagreba, Andrija je došao do saznanja da se na određenoj dubini Zemlje mijenja brzina širenja potresnog vala.
